Hiking to Tietiesbaai
You can hike to Tietiesbaai from Jacobsbaai starting at Hospital Bay. It is a 17km trail that follows the coast line along the beaches.
Start early so you can have a late lunch in Paternoster and phone a friend to pick you up and bring you back to Jacobsbaai.
The best time to view flowers depends on the rain season, but usually they are in bloom from Aug until Sept. With late rains October is also alive with colour.
During the entire year Jacobsbaai has unique plant species that bloom at various occasions. Please view the Fynbos page to refer to the multitude of rare and endangered species of fynbos that abound in the area.

Onsevis (previously Hotnotsvis) and galjoen can be caught in the mouth of Mauritz Bay. The platklip (flat rock) in Jacobsbaai is famous for catching kabeljou – also try the sandy beaches of Swartriet for both steenbras and kabeljou. Smaller fish like haarders also abound and the kids can have lots of fun catching some smaller species in the multitude of rock pools
Explore the town and various bay’s inlets from Tooth Rock, Mauritzbay, Smalbaai, Bamboesbaai until reaching Jacobsbaai with your mountain bike or ride the Mountain Bike trails in the West Coast National Park.
The West Coast Mall is merely 14km from Jacobsbaai. All modern amenities can be found here with major brands such as Woolworths, Clicks, Edgars, Fochini, Wordsworth, etc. For local souvenirs and beautiful home decor visit Willie Magrietjie at Die Weskusplek. For small needs such as chocolate cravings or the basic bread and milk you can visit Die Winkeltjie a small shop situated in Jacobsbaai at the Plaasopstal.
Crayfish diving at Jacobsbaai
The crayfish season usually starts sometime in November and ends around mid-April. Please note that crayfish may only be caught by snorkelling – no scuba gear may be used. A crayfish diving permit or license must also be obtained. Get your permit from a Post Office. R79 for a season. Apply for the West Coast Lobster on the permit. The best spot for diving in Jacobsbaai is Tooth Rock.
Wind surfing and kayaking
Small kayaks and paddle skis can easily be launched in Mauritzbay, Smalbaai and Jacobsbaai. This is also a placid environment for children to learn rowing skills. For the more adventurous that wants to do windsurfing the Swartriet waters are ideal.
Whale Watching and Dolphin Spotting
The best time of the year to spot whales at Jacobsbaai is during August – September. Some species that can be spotted are Humpback, Southern Right, Sperm Whales, Orca and the Long Fin Pilot whale. They are mainly seen in the mouth of Mauritzbay and just beyond Bamboesbaai’s edge.

West Coast Fossil Park
See the fossils of bears, sabre-tooth cats, short-necked giraffes and the many other exotic animals which inhabited the west coast area some 5 million years ago. The Fossil Park is a well-known national attraction.
